Sometimes change is not good ... Mon 04.02.2013

Written by bluecrisps

What was it my Grandma would say? "A change is as good as a rest" Unfortunately it's not if you are parenting autistic children.

Our children don't cope very well with change, at all. The need to have a well-structured routine and advance notification of potential change is vital.

I read about parents who literally just pack up a car and set off on holiday/road trip just for the adventure/fun and feel slightly envious that we'll never be doing that. For one, I don't drive and everything we do has to be risk-assessed, I hope it will get easier as T and D get older.

So, what is the change that has caused my D so much angst and distress today? Her teacher is off and has been since last Wednesday. No-one seems to know when she is back, she's injured her arm. It's an unfortunate situation that happens, luckily the other TAs are all in, but D is missing her teacher.

It's manifested itself in terms of a very unhappy girl I collected at hometime, she couldn't tell me what was wrong until we were well outside the school gates, she'd just wail - sometimes loudly, sometimes silently.

We've had an understandably sensitive D at home, when we've chatted to her about her day it sounds like the other children are missing their teacher too.

We've already had anxieties about school tomorrow - not to mention it's a PE day - because her teacher had agreed a strategy which seems to have been forgotten (a note in the diary time).

Hopefully tomorrow will go better than currently anticipated.

I didn't do a "Music Monday" earlier as I wanted my blog for World Cancer Awareness Day to be the primary post today - click here to read it.

Here therefore is today's Music Monday: Billy Idol - Eyes Without A Face (click on the title to view the video) I've chosen this today as I like the rocky element of the song which comes in at 2minutes 26seconds and, were I to put it in a normal music Monday post, I'd never be able to analyse the lyrics! The video is from 1984 and I hadn't seen it before today, a very young Billy at his sneering best.

So, that's rounded off our day, I hope everyone's had a good one, comments/RTs/shares as ever welcomed, thanks for reading Jx 😘

Oh gosh, sorry to hear this. We are going to be experiencing some sort of change next week with the Teacher's assistant changing over to someone else. She was assigned to the class but more so for my son as his support. She worked wonders with him since October but now the board is switching her out to someone else due to 'seniority'. This is the second time they are switching the support worker and apparently nothing can be done. The school has tried to keep her but the board's decision stands. I fear he's going to loose all he's gained so far with his current support teacher. It sucks when things are out of your control. But then again it may be fine, he's surprised me before.

Fingers crossed for you, hopefully it will all go well but at least you're prepared if it doesn't.
